Fikile Mbalula: ANC willing to enter into grand coalitions with other parties

African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said his party is more than willing to enter into “grand coalitions” with other parties.

A grand coalition is an arrangement in a multi-party system when the two largest political parties, usually of opposing political ideologies, unite.

Mbalula also said the party with the largest share of the vote must lead the coalition or municipality when there’s no outright winner.

He was addressing the National Dialogue on Coalition Governments in Cape Town on Friday.

The ANC has listed what it believes should form part of the coalition framework like putting a limit on motions of no confidence.

Mbalula said in each municipality, they’re willing to work with political parties that are “genuine and committed” to stabilise municipalities.

“We are also keen to explore grand coalitions in order to ensure stability, service delivery, and local development”.

Mbalula said the framework must favour the party with the most votes.

“The party that has won the largest vote should lead the coalition in that municipality and executive positions should be allocated in proportion to the votes obtained by coalition partners”.

The dialogue has also heard differing proposals from other parties like the Democratic Alliance, United Democratic Movement, and Al Jama ah.
