Fifth place will spark a title celebration for Galaxy

If TS Galaxy finish in a club record high fifth place at the end of the DStv Premiership season, coach Saed Ramovic says they will celebrate as if they have won the league. Galaxy moved up into fifth spot on Sunday as they came from a goal down at halftime to hold long-time nemesis Cape Town City to a 1-1 draw in the Mother City.

It was the first away point they had taken off City as Sphiwe Mahlangu converted a second half penalty after Darwin Gonzalez had scored on the breakaway on the stroke of halftime.

Galaxy advanced to 40 points – already the biggest haul in the club’s history and moved up one place from sixth. If you don’t have financial power, your expectation is only that you stay in the league,” said Ramovic, “that is a must.

“But if you reach the top eight, it’s a fantastic season. If you reach the top five is like you winning the league. If we finish in the top five this season, we will celebrate it just the same as if we had won the league,” added the Galaxy coach..

“I want that my players to get recognised because they’re playing a fantastic season. And they have fantastic character. They’ve shown it every day until now. And I think we are playing some of the best football in our league. If we are honest, we can, of course, improve. Not many of you guys believed before the season that we could fight to be in the top five. I believe in my work, I believe in my staff, I believe in myself,” he said.

The match against City was a third successive draw for Galaxy, who next host Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

“We wanted to win so badly, but a point keeps us on course for our dream, our goal, actually to be in the top eight. We are still in the race. And this makes us, of course, happy.

“The game started well, for us, we dominated the game, but we didn’t create that clear chances what we did in the last games against Chiefs and Sekhukhune. But I would like also to say it’s not easy to come here to play against a fantastic team like Cape Town City. They have outstanding team and their coach (Eric Tinkler) is also one of the best in our league.

“I think we conceded a goal that we should not have, because we knew that they are very strong on the counter attacks. It was our mistake. But I think that we came back in the second half again, with a lot of belief that we could change the game,” Ramovic asserted.
