Female Entrepreneurs we Admire in Mzansi
Starting a business in this hostile economy is a courageous thing to do as an aspiring entrepreneur these days.
Many start-up businesses are failing, and the word entrepreneur is enough to intimidate anyone who is even thinking of playing in this field.
However, there are many people, especially black women, who have become some of South Africa’s most revered black entrepreneurs.
We take a look at some of the most successful black female entrepreneurs in media.
Carol Bouwer
For some people, Carol is known as the popular actress and TV presenter from back in the 90s & 2000s. However, Carol has blossomed into one of the most respected businesswomen in media who is a producer and production company owner.
Carol’s interests do not only include television production but mining and property development as well.
Carol Bouwer also prides herself in being an ambassador for woman empowerment.
One of our favourite quotes from Mrs Bouwer was when she said:
“I don’t crave stardom. I want respect. Success must be defined by me.”

Fara Fortune
Farah Fortune owns one of the most influential PR firms in the country. Farah is famously known as that P.R lady to the stars and single handily built her PR company – African Star Communications from the ground up with only R1000.
Fast forward to 2019 and Farah’s company has grown to become one of the most successful P.R companies in the country.
Basetsana Kumalo
Whenever we think successful black female entrepreneurs in SA media, Basetsana Kumalo is one of the few black female entrepreneurs come to mind.
With a career that began in 1990, Basetsana evolved from being a beauty pageant titleholder to becoming a TV personality, now businesswoman and philanthropist. Basetsana Kumalo is the owner of Connect TV, which is a digital content and tv production that has been an Enterprise Development beneficiary of Multichoice Ltd.
She’s also the owner of the Basetsana Woman’s Investment Holdings which is a 100% black woman owned company focused mainly in resources, property, media and Telecommunications & IT.
Connie Ferguson
Film-maker, producer and businesswoman, Connie Ferguson together with her husband Shona Ferguson have succeeded in reviving local TV content with some of the most gripping and entertaining TV shows mzansi has ever seen.
Connie is also the owner of various beauty products sold across the country.
