NSRI warns beachgoers against jumping off rocks after fatal drowning

Beachgoers in the Western Cape have been urged to be responsible when swimming in the ocean and to be careful when jumping off rocks into the water.

This comes after a teenager died after diving off rocks into the surf at Fish Hoek beach on Saturday.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), lifeguards rushed to his aid and managed to get him out of the water.

However, efforts to resuscitate the 15-year-old boy were unsuccessful.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said on arrival at the scene, paramedics assisted the lifeguards to revive the teenager.

“After extensive CPR efforts were exhausted, sadly the teenager was declared deceased. The body of the teenager was taken into the care of government health forensic pathology services. Police have opened an inquest docket. Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased teenager.”
