MEC Lesufi: Fake news impeding rollout among teachers

Fake news and myths are some of the reasons why teachers aren’t taking the COVID-19 vaccine according to Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi who is hoping teaching staff will change their minds.

Almost 10,000 personnel in the province’s education sector, some with comorbidities, don’t want the vaccine.

Lesufi said, “the form we distributed to our educators or staff members, requires that you fill the reason.”

“The reason being, we have lots and lots of educators that are staying at home and are paying alternative staff members purely because of their underlying diseases, so with the vaccine, it will allow us to reduce the cost of paying alternative educators.”

“So that form requires them to indicate whether you’ll take the vaccine and if not why.”

“It’s quite clear from the reasons that have been provided it’s mainly a myth and the power of fake news that has taken over some of our staff members. It worries us especially when some of the educators will fall within that trap and accept fake news as reality and refuse to take the vaccine.”

“But we live in a democratic state and the use of the vaccine is not compulsory within this sector, it is a choice that is highly recommended. As a Department, we will continue to pursue and ensure that educators accept this responsibility,” the MEC said.
