Expert says fourth COVID-19 wave not expected to be as bad as previous waves

The fourth COVID-19 wave is expected in mid-December or early January, but experts say it shouldn’t be as bad as previous waves. Adrian Puren from the NICD says this is because there is more immunity in the country.

“I think we’ve had a fairly substantial resurgence…. there’s a fair degree of immunity that is present within South Africa,” he said. The Delta variant is certainly in circulation at the moment, there’s no evidence that there’s any other competing variant at this particular time.

“The contributions are in terms of a fourth resurgence, I’d like to just point out that the focus of the marking group is around hospital admissions and death.

Looking at those particular scenarios, we should really look at a different scenario, a substantial reduction in terms of hospital admissions and death but these are important to consider if you’re a Department of Health employee in terms of your planning, then this is going to be critical… still make sure that you do have hospital capacity, oxygen capacity, bed facilities and ICU’s are still ready, even though we are expecting a much reduced fourth resurgence with regards to admissions and deaths.
