Ex-Man United star warns Jadon Sancho about joining United. The England winger has been in outstanding form for the Bundesliga outfit this season, notching 17 goals and adding 19 assists from just 35 appearances across all competitions. It has already been claimed that he has agreed to provisional personal terms over a switch to Old Trafford, although no transfer agreement has been finalised as United hope that Dortmund will lower their hefty £100million asking price.
Jadon Sancho has been told that playing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offers no guarantees that his game will improve further as the Manchester United boss has ‘little track record of developing the game’s top young stars.
However, while former Man Utd star Paul Ince can understand exactly why the club are looking to sign the 20-year-old England star, he has warned Sancho to think twice if Solskjaer would be the best mentor to take him to the next level. “When it comes to transfers, it’s not just about the team, it’s about the manager,” Ince told Paddy Power.
“Let’s look at Raheem Sterling as an example, Pep Guardiola has turned him into a world-class player through his coaching and guidance. Sometimes as a player, it’s about looking at a team’s manager and coaching staff and whether they’d take you to that next level. That’s a decision Sancho will need to make.
“We know that Pep is experienced in that area, we know he can improve a player. But can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? We don’t know that, whatsoever. We have no clue what he’s like at developing a player of that magnitude.
“He’s clearly trying to develop a young team, so that will help, but in terms of actually the man to man management and development of someone like Sancho, he’s a total unknown. We’ve not seen any evidence yet that he can take a player to the next level. “Firstly, he’s not been at United long enough to know that, but also because in his previous jobs he’s not had players like that at his disposable. We’ve seen it with Pep, and we’ve seen it with Jurgen Klopp, and the best managers are the ones who can take a player to that new level and improve them. Ole’s not at that yet, it doesn’t mean he can’t do that, but we’ve not had that proof yet.
“To use myself as an example, when I went to Inter Milan, I became a far better player under Roy Hodgson. He truly took my game to a next level, I felt fitter, stronger, my awareness went up tenfold. That, plus the change in culture and experience that I had.
“What I’m saying is, Sancho needs to consider all of those factors, culture, environment, team and ultimately the manager.” Ince’s former United teammate Gary Neville has warned the Red Devils that Sancho might not be at the level he is hyped up to be, but Ince admits he can fully understand why Solskjaer’s side are looking to invest vast sums – and possibly a club-record fee – to land the attacker.
“He’s worth breaking the bank for,” the 52-year-old, who played more than 200 times for United continued. “He’s still young, only 20, yet so established. He’s obviously incredibly talented, and although the club will be entering a bidding war if they want to buy him if they have the chance they would be stupid not to.
“Fans would be right to be disappointed if they thought United had the chance to have Sancho, and the club didn’t fight for him.” United’s hopes of signing Sancho were handed a lift earlier this week when it was claimed Borussia Dortmund had moved to sign a talented Barcelona star as his replacement, though the LaLiga side will insist on a buy-back clause in any deal.
