KZN COGTA MEC appoints 2 governance experts to assist struggling eThekwini Municipality

Two governance experts have been appointed to assist the eThekwini Municipality as the metro continues to buckle under functionality woes.

The intervention comes amid ongoing battles in the metro including rampant crime, service delivery issues, crime, and aging infrastructure.

The appointments were made by Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who highlighted that their expertise was needed to return the municipality to its former glory as an economic hub.

Cooperative Governance spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila: “The strategic support under 154 will entail building a clean, effective, efficient responsive and accountable local government, implementation of findings of investigation reports, addressing non-compliance with terms and conditions, including poor spending on allocated grants for various projects and strengthening partnerships between communities.”

The support to the metro will be led by former municipal manager, Dr Mike Sutcliffe and former Presidency director-general, Dr Cassius Lubisi.

“The appointed team will provide monthly reports to the MEC and will be in operation for twelve months starting from 1 July 2024. The executive committee welcomed the MEC’s intervention and committed to work together with the appointed team.”
