KZN DA secures trial date for sewage & water case against eThekwini Municipality

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has secured a trial date for the sewer and water court case against the eThekwini Municipality.

The party in the province approached the court in February this year over the city’s ongoing water and sewerage issues.

For years the coastal city has experienced sewer spillages flowing into the sea as a result of aging infrastructure at wastewater treatment works, leading to the closure of beaches.

The city has also battled with water issues which also saw residents in communities north of Durban protesting.

The eThekwini Metro Municipality is expected to stand trial over the sewer crisis, which halted the operation of various beaches.

The Durban High Court has set down 8 August for this, in a matter brought before it by the DA in KZN.

In its founding affidavit to the court, the party seeks to compel the metro municipality to ensure that wastewater treatment plants are fixed.

The party says the sewer spillages have impacted negatively on people’s health and have also affected to city’s economy in terms of tourism.

The municipality has told the publication that it does not comment on matters before the court.
