ANC joins voices condemning Eskom’s request for tariff increase

The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament has added its voice to the rejection of Eskom’s request for an electricity tariff increase.

The party said the proposed double-digit hike was unacceptable.

The power utility has approached the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), requesting a 36% tariff increase for the upcoming financial year.

Following a request by the Democratic Alliance (DA) for the matter to be discussed by the National Assembly – a debate is set to take place on Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the DA led what it called a nationwide day of action, with members protesting against Eskom’s request for yet another tariff hike.

The party argued the power utility needed to propose a more reasonable increase, warning the suggested 36% would further strain cash-strapped South Africans.

The ANC has echoed these sentiments, saying while it acknowledges the necessity for a tariff increase, it’s concerned about the unaffordability.

The party has emphasized the need for a concerted effort to find a solution that benefits both Eskom and households.
