Eskom spent R10 billion on diesel in 2021

Eskom Chief Financial Officer, Calib Cassim, says the utility is spending billions on diesel just to keep the lights on. He was speaking during a virtual media briefing on Thursday.
CEO Andre de Ruyter says while spending money on diesel is not ideal, diesel-fed gas turbines are important in producing enough power to meet peak demand in the evenings. The power utility is sitting with debt close to R 400-billion.
Eskom’s diesel spending shows no sign of abating, and a spike in oil prices due to the war in Ukraine will probably add to the debt-ridden power utility’s financial problems. #DStv403 #eNCA pic.twitter.com/HumXubLROu
