Eskom says it has successfully returned eight generating units to service.
The power utility has moved the country down to Stage 1 power cuts on Friday.
The rolling blackouts are planned to end at 9pm.
Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter will update the country on the situation on Friday morning.
