Minister Godongwana: Eskom expenditure disclosure exemption not rooted in secrecy

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said exempting Eskom from disclosing irregular, wasteful, and fruitless expenditures was not an attempt to hide anything.

He said the intention was to allow Eskom to have better financial statements as it tries to raise capital.

Godongwana was addressing a joint committee of parliament before he ultimately withdrew the exemption.

The minister was invited to Parliament to explain his rationale behind the decision to exempt Eskom from making certain disclosures.

This followed a public outcry from political parties and the public.

But Godongwana assured members of Parliament (MPs) that the decision was not to hide anything.

“Create an environment where there is transparency on corruption and irregular expenditure and all of that. So there are two platforms created in that exemption. So the intention is not to hide anything in that regard.

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Dion George said while they welcomed the withdrawal, Godongwana still had a lot to explain.

“I would like to know who advised the minister. We do as mentioned earlier have a competent Treasury so that advice must have come from somewhere.”

MPs gave Godongwana one clear message, that the withdrawal should be made permanent and not temporary.
