Eskom asked to keep lights on for pupils

The Basic Education Department has given Eskom three proposals on suspending power cuts. This after the recent blackouts affected pupils writing final exams.

The department, Eskom, and Public Enterprises’ stakeholders met virtually on Thursday to discuss the impact on school children.

The department wants blackouts avoided during the South African Sign Language Home Language exams on 23 and 30 November. Its second proposal is that Eskom suspends outages every evening from 7pm to 11 pm, from Sunday to Thursday countrywide.

The department also wants blackouts suspended at all 194 marking centres. Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter says the proposals will be considered and a team will be assembled to implement what is possible.
