Makhadzi speaks out after escaping a shooting

South African musician, Makhadzi escaped unharmed, yet traumatized from a shooting incident at a gig in Tshwane. The singer was billed to perform at the Ga-Rankuwa Shisanyama on Saturday night 14 May when the incident occurred.

According to a local publication, Makhadzi was shot at by two thieves after she waited for her turn to perform at the venue.

According to Makhadzi’s record label, Open Mic Records, the Limpopo star was scheduled to perform at 8pm, but was delayed until midnight. The singer opted to wait in her vehicle and “rest”.

But the unthinkable happened when the singer was ambushed by two armed men.

The label’s co-owner Lionel Jamela told the publication: “The guy put his gun on Makhadzi’s neck and took her phone from her hand. And when she started screaming and running he [cocked] his gun and shot towards Makhadzi and dancers, but missed them.

Everyone who was at the parking lot ran away. Upon leaving the venue we (Makhadzi, dancer and me) noticed a car following us, we went for the nearest police station. We opened a case at Ga-Rankuwa police station. Police even escorted us out of Ga-Rankuwa.”

The label exec claimed the star and her dancers had received counselling after being shaken by the crime.

He added: “As the company we are shocked by this incident that someone would want to harm one of the country’s superstars. We are happy that she is safe and the dancers. As the company, we promised to beef up security for our artists when they go out to work.”

According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello, a case of robbery has been opened at Ga-Rankuwa police station. The incident is being investigated.

Meanwhile, Makhadzi hinted at the traumatic experience in a Facebook post.

She shared in a telling caption: “Don’t forget to thank God for your life. Life is too short”.
