Enock Mpianzi’s death: Report finds principal, teachers were negligent

Enock Mpianzi died because of the water activity he participated in went wrong. Investigators looking into the Grade 8 pupil’s death gave details of what might have caused the drowning.
The Gauteng Education Department together with the investigators gave a full report into Mpianzi’s death. The 13- year-old Parktown Boys’ High School pupil drowned during a school orientation camp in January. Mpianzi is the fifth pupil to die at the Nyati Bush and River Break lodge during a water exercise.
The forensic report found:
Pupils were doing a water exercise in high current water with no life jackets.
There was no supervision from teachers on exercises at the camp. There was no roll call list of the learners at the camp. On the part of the lodge, it was found that they were not truthful about information.
Five teachers and the principal have been found to be negligent and didn’t fulfil their duty to protect pupils. We find that there is negligence on the part of the school in not having the accurate and correct roll call list of all attendees at that camp,” said Peter Harris of Harris Nupen Molebatsi Attorneys.
The relevant educators should be held responsible and charged, and that includes the headmaster as the ultimate commander-in-chief… of the school.
Harris said if the correct roll call list had been used, they would have realised 18 hours earlier that Mpianzi was missing and search attempts could have been activated. Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says it’s already applying the recommendation. In the meantime, Mpianzi’s family is conducting its own investigation.
