MPs say the State of Disaster won’t end energy woes

The debate on how to deal with the energy crisis rages on.

South Africa has endured hours of power cuts every day this year, so far.

And 2023 is predicted to be a historic year for blackouts, outstripping last year’s record-breaking 200 days in the dark.

The declaration of a State of Disaster over the worsening crisis hasn’t been well-received by most MPs during a mini-debate on Thursday.

MPs argued that declaring a State of Disaster won’t solve the root problem.

Instead, they say, it opens the door for corruption to thrive.
