Load reduction labelled energy racism
The Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee is accusing Eskom of energy racism.
Parts of the area were plunged into darkness when the utility implemented load reduction.
The committee’s Trevor Ngwane says only black areas are targeted.
But Eskom says it’s aimed at densely populated areas to avoid network overloading.
“This load reduction is only aimed at black working-class areas, you will never find in Sandton, Constantia, Umhlanga Rocks, and all these rich bourgeoisie areas,” Ngwane said.
“So basically Eskom has been caught out because after this matter was exposed of load reduction, it quietened down but now it has to come clear because they are balancing the shortages of the system, their own shortcomings, with attacking poor, black middle-class working people.”
