South Africa is likely to see 10,000 new COVID-19 cases daily by the end of the week.
That is according to epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim.
He says higher transmissibility of the Omicron variant is likely to put pressure on hospitals.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Joe Phaahla is urging South Africans to not panic over the new variant.
Phaahla says the decision by some countries to impose travel restrictions on South Africa is unjustified.
The Omicron variant has been detected in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy among other countries.
Authorities say while it is unclear whether vaccines protect against the new variant, they believe that the vaccine will help in preventing hospitalizations.
