Concerns around safety of EMS workers

This festive season, there’s growing concern about the safety of those that keep us safe.

Paramedics and emergency services are increasingly becoming victims of violent crime.

A Durban crew escaped serious injury when their ambulance was shot and damaged earlier this week.

It’s reported that they had been responding to a car accident on Berea Road in the City.

Paramedic Thando Mbatha said she was in shock after the incident.

“We responded to a call for an accident. When we got there we heard shots.

“We realized the ambulance was being shot at,” she said.

“In my mind, I didn’t know what was going on and my question was why are we getting fired at?

“I thought maybe we were being hijacked,” she said.
