Parliament celebrates amendment to Electoral Act

On Freedom Day, Parliament celebrated the amendment to the Electoral Act as a step towards ensuring that South Africa’s democracy continues.

Freedom Day marks 29 years since the country’s first democratic election.

Under the amended act, independent candidates who are not linked to any political party can stand for election.

Parliament said the move to allow independent candidates to run for elections was a significant step towards adding diverse voices and opinions to South Africa’s democratic processes.

The amendment also meant that South Africans could compete for the 200 regional seats in the National Assembly.

Parliament added that Freedom Day should be about renewing the commitment to the ongoing transformation of society.

It should also be about continuing the work to tackle the social ills that are affecting South African – added Parliament.
