Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, has been transferred to a halfway house in the San Pedro area to carry out the rest of her prison sentence for helping Guzmán’s massive drug empire, officials say.
Coronel Aispuro was transferred on May 30 from the Federal Medical Center at the Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas to the Bureau of Prisons’ Long Beach Residential Reentry Management Office in San Pedro, according to a spokesperson from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Where the halfway house is located was not specified.
The facility is known as “community confinement,” or a halfway house, a type of supervised release that is reserved for inmates at the tail end of their sentence. Coronel Aispuro, 33, a former teenage beauty queen, married Guzmán in 2007. She was sentenced in 2021 to three years in prison, followed by four years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to her part in aiding her husband’s enormous drug operation, including a money-laundering conspiracy charge.
Guzmán was sentenced to life in prison in 2019. His wife is expected to be released in September.
El Chapo, now 66 years old was reportedly arrested in 2019 and continues to be held in a supermax facility in Florence, Colorado. The couple were said to have married when the notorious drug lord was 50 and Aispuro was 18. They were said to have two pre-teen twin daughters together, Emali Guadalupe and Maria Joaquina.
During El Chapo’s sentencing, his wife who was said to have frequently appeared in court reportedly burst into laughter when one of her husband’s mistresses broke down into tears. It was said that El Chapo will be released in mid-September.
