Gauteng ANC to meet over shambolic Ekurhuleni regional conference

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng will meet again on Tuesday, following Monday night’s urgent provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting over a high court judgement regarding Ekurhuleni’s shambolic regional conference.
On Monday, Judge Denise Fisher ruled that the region’s May 2022 conference, which was marred by violence, along with all its decisions, resolutions, and election results needed to be set aside.
Eight applicants took the ANC to court over 14 quarantined votes.
Fisher also questioned the roles played by current Gauteng provincial secretary TK Nciza and the ANC’s first deputy secretary general, Nomvula Mokonyane, in processes leading up to, during, and after the regional conference.
The judgement, which read like a series of own goals on the part of the ANC, found that the party responded badly to allegations of manipulation of processes.
In the 55-page verdict, Fisher took issue with the ANC’s handling of its own verification processes, how the party’s national executive committee responded to complaints from the four branches, as well as its 70% threshold rule used to determine if a conference can go ahead.
She also slammed Nciza – then regional secretary who was busy paving the way to his own election as provincial secretary for his role in the saga.
Nciza told the publication that such a judgement could have dire consequences for the ANC as a political party.
“If they’re not studied carefully, they’ve got implications for the future on how the organisation is run. We just have to make sure that the judgement does not contravene the same ANC constitution.”
The publication understands the regional executive in Ekurhuleni is likely to be converted into a task team, with the party expected to seek an appeal after obtaining a legal opinion.
