Update: Eastern Cape scholar transport operators suspend protests after shutdown threats

Scholar transport operators in the Eastern Cape have suspended their protest after threatening a total shutdown.

Parts of the N2 highway in the Buffalo City Metro were brought to a standstill on Thursday as operators took to the streets demanding to be paid.

It’s understood the department failed to pay service providers of scholar transport on time.

Several transport operators blockaded roads in the early hours of Thursday morning, claiming their vehicles were under threat of being repossessed.

Dozens of pupils were left stranded, with some schools in East London having to shut their doors as a result.

The department said the non-payment was due to technical glitches and some operators’ refusal to sign contracts.

“There were sporadic actions in the Chris Hani District as well as in Dutywa. However, our law enforcement officers have been able to control the situation,” said spokesperson Unathi Binqose.
