Still no homes for families affected by Eastern Cape floods

The government will never intentionally ignore the needs of victims of natural disasters.

That was the promise from President Cyril Ramaphosa when he visited Port St Johns in March.

It’s been a month since then and the Eastern Cape town is still waiting to see proof of the president’s promise.

Port St Johns mayor Nomvuzo Mlombile-Cingo says she’s becoming increasingly frustrated with the delays in improving the state of the roads that were damaged by the heavy rains.

She says that many residents are still without homes despite promises made by the government.

“The progress has been quite slow. For example, on the part of the temporary structures, we received 37 but what we are waiting for is a certificate from Human Settlements,” she said.
