Chelsea’s Dynel Simeu joins Southampton

Chelsea have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of teenager Dynel Simeu.

The 19-year-old central defender left Chelsea on July 1 after turning down an improved deal to stay at Stamford Bridge in the hope of securing a better pathway to first-team football elsewhere.

The deal will be a much-celebrated one at St Mary’s, should they get it over the line, and one that the club will hope to complete in the coming days.

Saints have beaten a number of clubs to his signature with the move representing something of a homecoming for Simeu, who was raised in Hampshire.

But who is Simeu? Why has he walked away from Stamford Bridge? And how will he fit into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad?

Dynel Simeu is a released Chelsea central defender who last season found himself, on occasions, wearing the captain’s armband for the Under-23s, their most senior and adored academy side.

An England youth international, the defender was raised in Hampshire and was spotted by Chelsea while playing for local Sunday League club Chamberlayne Athletic.

The scouts who spotted him were impressed to learn that he had scooped the club’s player of the year awards, all while playing a year above his age group.
