Durban communities say no to national shutdown

Some communities in Durban are saying no to the planned national shutdown.

Local business owners and community policing forum members from places such as Marianhill and Kwandengezi have held a media briefing to outline the reasons for their decision.

Some fear the planned shutdown by the Economic Freedom Fighters will cause destruction such as looting.

“We suffered a lot in 2021 and after that, it was the floods so we can’t allow any situation of such nature to repeat itself,” said CPF chairperson Dawoon Chirwa.

Some worry it might turn into a looting spree while taxi association Santaco says they can’t afford to lose the business.

“Strikes interfere with our work and the taxis we use need to be paid for. The banks want their money, they don’t care about any strikes,” Santaco’s Nkosingani Shange said.

“So, because of that, in Mariannhill we won’t allow anyone to interfere with our work.”
