High levels of E. coli force Durban beaches to close

eThekwini Municipality has shut down six beaches immediately due to safety concerns after the municipality detected high levels of E. coli.
It says levels of this bacteria have been compounded by the unceasing vandalism of one of the city’s sewage pump stations.
It also blames abnormal heavy rains that washed waste from informal settlements along the Umngeni River to the beach.
The affected beaches include South and North Beach, Umgeni, Country Club and Bay of Plenty beaches.
The metro says it’s doing everything in its power to get E. coli levels to acceptable standards.
