The Basic Education Department says it’s not responsible for providing water to schools.
But, it says it recognizes the impact of dry taps on learning.
The department says it’s taking on that responsibility in some schools.
“Education is disrupted if the provision of water is not consistent,” said spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.
“We have water tanks in schools but when those water tanks run empty, it is for the municipalities to bring the water or the provincial department water or whichever authority is there in the province, depending on the modalities of government in that particular area.
“But we do our part to inform them. We as the department have been slowly taking up the responsibility of providing water in schools,” he said.
