Over 120 drunk drivers arrested in a single night in Eastern Cape

Over 120 drunk drivers arrested in a single night in Eastern Cape! More than 120 motorists were arrested for suspected drunk driving in the Eastern Cape — and that’s just in one night. The arrests came as provincial traffic authorities launched intensified road safety operations ahead of the busy Easter weekend.
According to officials, most of the arrests were made in the Amathole and Sarah Baartman districts, areas that typically see a spike in traffic volumes and accidents during long weekends and holiday periods.

The province’s traffic law enforcement teams were out in full force on Friday night, conducting roadside checks, breathalyzer tests, and vehicle inspections at several key points. Their efforts led to the arrest of 122 suspected drunk drivers, raising alarm about the continued prevalence of driving under the influence despite ongoing awareness campaigns.
Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed the arrests and emphasized that these operations will not slow down. “A total of 122 suspected drunk drivers have been arrested on Friday night alone in the Eastern Cape, as the build-up to today’s Easter road safety activation—led by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy—intensified on Friday and Saturday night,” he said.
Minister Creecy is expected to officially launch the national Easter road safety campaign on Sunday. The campaign will focus on encouraging safer driving behavior, reducing road fatalities, and holding offenders accountable during one of South Africa’s busiest travel periods.
Authorities have warned that the clampdown will continue throughout the holiday season, with more roadblocks and zero tolerance for reckless driving, particularly involving alcohol.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead, avoid drinking and driving, and prioritize safety for themselves and others on the road.
