Drinking spree ends in tears: Nurse hit by drunk driver on her way to work

The health department has been left furious after a nurse was killed by a driver accused of being drunk while on her way to work on Boxing Day.

Susan Mulaudzi was driving her white Nissan NP200 bakkie to Elim Hospital, outside Makhado in Limpopo, when an allegedly drunk driver crashed into her head-on.

It’s alleged the 26-year-old taxi driver and four passengers were heading home from Asawa Tavern in Ha-Masakona Village after spending the night drinking.

Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba said she was angry and demanded justice.

She said the taxi was from Gauteng and the driver was home for the festive season.

“They decided to leave the tavern in the morning and, unfortunately, met a hardworking, responsible, and caring citizen on her way to preserve lives.

“I’m angry. I can’t lose professional nurses during the period when I need them the most.

“People came back from Gauteng and, instead of spending time at home with their families, they go on a drinking spree.”

The MEC said her department would ensure justice was seen to be served.

“These people should be arrested. Not only did they undermine curfew regulations, but their arrogance and stubbornness robbed us of a lifesaver,” she said.

Susan leaves behind a son, daughter and husband, who is a radiographer at the same hospital.

He was on duty when his wife died.

Limpopo police spokesman, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the driver of the taxi was admitted to hospital in a serious condition and would be charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol once he recovers from his injuries.
