Transnet workers down tools

Transnet has confirmed it has declared a force majeure across its terminal operations.

Unhappy union members have gone on strike.

Transnet said in a statement that employees from the United National Transport Union (UNTU), one of two recognized unions in Transnet, have embarked on an illegal and unprotected strike, “which is an event beyond the control of TPT and the customer”.

Transnet hiked its wage increase from 1.5 percent to 3 percent.

But the United National Transport Union is not happy with the hike and other unmet demands.

Transnet insists that the strike – which will see disruptions in the movement of cargo – is illegal.

Labour union Satawu says that all of Transnet’s operations across the country will cease to function if parastatal does not up its wage offer.
