DJ Tira Announces Major Change for FACT Durban Rocks

South African music heavyweight DJ Tira has officially addressed the future of one of the country’s most iconic year-end events, FACT Durban Rocks. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the Afrotainment founder, whose real name is Mthokozi Khathi, confirmed that this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration will mark the final edition organized by the current team.

The announcement has sparked mixed emotions among fans, many of whom have made FACT Durban Rocks a December tradition. According to DJ Tira, the decision was not taken lightly and followed months of careful observation, discussion, and concern around changes affecting New Year’s Eve events in Durban.

In his statement, DJ Tira revealed that the FACT Durban Rocks brand and its trademarks will be officially put up for sale in January 2026. This means that while the event may continue in the future, it will do so under new ownership and potentially a new creative direction.

Tira explained that the turning point came after ongoing public dissatisfaction with the city’s early closing times for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Over the years, FACT Durban Rocks became synonymous with all-night partying, running from evening until the early hours of the morning. However, recent restrictions have altered the event’s identity.

DJ Tira Confirms FACT Durban Rocks Will Be Sold

“Since July, we have received many concerns about us closing early at midnight for NYE, and we understand those sentiments,” DJ Tira said. “We wanted to observe how the response would be regarding the New Year’s Eve closing times from the city before determining our next steps.”

Looking back, DJ Tira highlighted the rich history of FACT Durban Rocks, which has been a staple on the South African entertainment calendar since 2011. Traditionally, the event ran from 6pm to 6am and was hosted twice a year, setting it apart as one of the longest-running and most anticipated music gatherings in the country.

He also praised the brand’s resilience, especially during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Tira, FACT was among the first major entertainment brands to bounce back after lockdowns, successfully hosting two picnic-style events and becoming the only event to stage two outdoor broadcasts during that difficult period.

This adaptability, he noted, played a key role in cementing FACT Durban Rocks as more than just a party—it became a cultural institution.

This December will see the 30th edition of FACT Durban Rocks, a milestone that DJ Tira described as deeply symbolic. For him, the anniversary represents both a celebration of longevity and the right moment to step aside and allow new talent to take the reins.

“This New Year’s Eve will be the final event organized by the current partners,” he confirmed. “In January 2026, the FACT brand and its trademarks will be put up for sale.”

By choosing to end his chapter at such a significant moment, DJ Tira emphasized his belief in growth, evolution, and making space for fresh ideas within the entertainment industry.

Gratitude was a central theme in DJ Tira’s statement. He expressed sincere appreciation to the fans who supported FACT Durban Rocks for more than a decade, attending the event “through rain or shine” and embracing its late-night culture.

He also acknowledged the role played by key partners and sponsors, including the city of Durban, the KwaZulu-Natal province, and major brands such as SAB and Schweppes. According to Tira, their support was instrumental in sustaining the event and elevating it to national prominence.

In closing, DJ Tira delivered an emotional message to the community that helped build FACT Durban Rocks into one of South Africa’s biggest year-end celebrations.

“Thank you for being part of our journey,” he said. “It has been an honor to serve this community of Fact Fans and hopefully we see you for one more time.”

As anticipation builds for the final New Year’s Eve edition under his leadership, fans are preparing to celebrate not just another event, but the end of an era shaped by DJ Tira’s vision, dedication, and love for South African music culture.
