2-year dispute over taxi routes in KZN comes to an end

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed the end of a two-year dispute over taxi routes in Ulundi and oPhongola in the northern parts of the province.

Tax wars in parts of KZN have in the past turned deadly, claiming the lives of industry bosses and commuters.

Last week, the provincial transport department met with leading taxi associations and law enforcement officials in a bid to address simmering tensions.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the meetings resulted in the signing of historic agreements that will bring about long-lasting solutions.

“1. Members of the association resolved that, in line with the High Court ruling, the Durban and Johannesburg routes will be operated by all members. 2. Each member shall bring one vehicle to operate the long-distance routes. 3. The association further resolved that all long-distance routes would be operated equally. 4. Members who elect not to operate long-distance routes are at liberty to stick to the local routes,” said Sibiya.
