#SONA2023: Eskom to study disaster declaration

The government has gazetted a National State of Disaster to deal with the electricity crisis.
President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement on Thursday during his State of the Nation Address.
Eskom says they will study details in the Government Gazette.
This is in order to understand the implications of the declaration before it provides any further comment.
“With regards to the president’s speech declaring a state of electricity disaster, Eskom will study the details in the Government Gazette to understand the implications before it can provide any further comment,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantha.
“With regards to the creation of a new government department for electricity, Eskom is unable to comment on any policy decisions and of course will continue to work with government through the shareholder ministry.”
During his address, Ramaphosa said the state of disaster will exempt critical infrastructure including hospitals and water treatment plants from rolling blackouts.
Ramaphosa also said a Minister of Electricity in the Presidency will be appointed.
