When Onkarabile Buthelezi’s family took him to Ga Magogo’s Place to be looked after, they never thought they’d lose him.
But the eight-month-old allegedly died in the care of gogo Johanna Lebang (69), who babysits kids around Soshanguve extension 6, Tshwane, on Friday, 22 April.
Speaking to the publication, Onkarabile’s gogo, Emma Dibakwane (60), said she was at work when she got a call from gogo Johanna that her grandson was not well.
However, she allegedly got awful answers when she asked gogo Johanna what happened.
She said even the mother was told that giving her details would not bring back her child and she must just prepare to bury her baby.
Gogo Emma said: “I was shocked to hear that from a gogo we trusted with our children.”
She said she called the baby’s parents and uncle to check what was going on. The uncle later called to tell her the baby had died.
Gogo Emma and Onkarabile’s mum went to Ga Magogo’s Place, where the mum performed CPR on her baby and noticed food coming out of the child’s nose.
“When we tried to find out what happened, gogo told us she fed the baby his porridge and took him to sleep,” she said.
She said what hurts them the most is that gogo Johanna’s family is not showing any remorse.
“We wish for gogo to stop babysitting little ones. The baby’s distraught mother said opening a case won’t bring back her boy, because gogo will only spend one night in jail and will soon be walking freely,” she said. as if a soul was not lost,
Gogo Johanna said this was the first time something so tragic happened. But she denied that she was rude to the family. and never said they should focus on burying the child.“How can I say such cruel words to a family that has lost a child? It’s my first priority to ensure the kids are safe.
“All I remember is that I fed the child in the morning and later took him to sleep. When I noticed that he looked unwell, I called his granny and an ambulance, but it arrived very late,” she said.
NotInMyName chairwoman in Soshanguve, Kabelo Theoga, said what happened is sad. She said looking at the conditions at gogo’s place, they want the owner to take responsibility and stop operating.
