Marking of the 2020 National Senior Certificate exam papers is ahead of schedule, according to the education department.
Basic Education Director-General Mathanzima Mweli visited 181 marking centres around the country to monitor the status of the marking process.
The DG said despite challenges like load-shedding, there was minimal impact on distribution. He stated the department is ahead of schedule by three to four days.
Mweli said 90 percent of the marking centres have closed and are now in the process of standardisation.
The director for National Assessment and Public Examinations, Priscilla Ogunbanjo, congratulated markers before giving an update on the capturing of the marks.
Mark-capturing has started and 611 capturers have been appointed, according to Ogunbanjo. She stated the mark-capturing is anticipated to conclude by 25 January.
The department will present how they have managed irregularities to quality assurer Umalusi on 12 February.
Once Umalusi has approved the results of the exams, the department will begin sharing preliminary information on 19 February.
The minister is expected to announce the results on 22 February followed by provincial releases on 23 February.
