Concerns over whistleblower protection following Deokaran’s murder

The government needs to do more to protect those who speak out against corruption, according to Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele.

Gungubele says the murder of senior Gauteng health department official, Babita Deokaran, has revealed cracks in the government’s protection system.

Deokaran was gunned down outside her Joburg home last week.

She was helping the Special Investigating Unit with its probe into PPE corruption in the province.

Two more people have been arrested in connection with Deokaran’s murder, bringing the total to eight.
