Family wants murder accused farmer to be denied bail

Tension is mounting in Glencoe, KwaZulu-Natal, ahead of a local farmer’s bail application in a murder case.
Teenager Qiniso Dlamini was shot dead last week, allegedly by Garth Simpson.
On 28 September gunshots shattered the quiet of Glencoe. The last one marked the end of 17-year-old Qiniso Dlamini’s life.
The Grade 10 pupil and his teenage relatives had apparently been tracking their family’s cattle when they found them on a local farmer’s property when an altercation, which was captured on video, broke out.
Dlamini’s family says his killing came as such a shock.
Qiniso’s mother Bonisile Dlamini said, “I was at work on that day. I knocked off at 4 pm. On the way home, I received a phone call from his father asking whether I had heard the news about Qiniso. I asked him not to continue with the story. Then his father started crying. I lost strength from there and I was terrified. I kept wondering whether my boy was dead or had been arrested. Even though his father did not finish the story, I heard [it was bad].”
The teenager’s mother recounts the last moments she shared with him and says she will treasure this memory always.
“We didn’t talk that much the last we spoke. I was sitting on the couch and he was seated next to me. He seemed like he was not okay. So, I cuddled him and he slept on my lap.”
“I then gave him my lunchbox [with food] that I had not eaten at work. I told him he could eat it the next day because he was not someone who ate many different foods. He only ate chicken. That was our last day together.”
With tensions in the area rising, the local mayor is appealing for calm ahead of Simpson’s bail application.
He said this incident is the most serious the community has experienced in many years.
Sduduzo Mdluli, Endumeni mayor said, “Endumeni is a very peaceful community. We’ve had reports about issues between farm dwellers and farm owners. But a situation as brutal as this, we have not had in the past two or three decades.”
“We have had reports of isolated incidents and there will never be harmony between farm dwellers and farm owners. We have treated those issues as issues that require urgent attention from the authorities. On our side as the Endumeni Municipality, we have tried to intervene in some instances. We have been able to solve some of the issues.”
Protestors, calling for bail to be denied, are expected to gather outside the court on Wednesday.
