Delportshoop learners back at school after measles outbreak

The Northern Cape Education Department says it has put in place a curriculum recovery plan to ensure that learners catch up on the work they missed last week. Four schools in Delportshoop were temporarily closed due to a measles outbreak. This affected over 100 learners. Schools in the area have since re-opened.

The department’s head of communications, Lehuma Ntuane says, “We are happy to report that all the affected schools have since reopened and that learners are back in school. What is also encouraging is that the Department of Health has begun with the rollout of the vaccination at the affected schools and our subject advisors will be assisting at the schools, particularly the learners who missed out and there is already a curriculum recovery plan to make sure that the is no time lost as a result of what happened.”

Parents say they are relieved that the situation is back to normal.

One parent says, “I am happy that learners are back in school so that they can gain knowledge. Education is very important and it will open many doors for them.

Another parent says, “We are pleased that the schools have reopened. It was really a concern when the schools were closed because if children are just sitting at home, they miss a lot of school work. They are already on their third quarter so it is best now that they are back in school.
