The Delft community in Cape Town wants to be exempted from rolling blackouts due to an increase in crime in the area.
Residents from several nearby areas say they have also recorded rises in crime during power cuts, particularly at night.
Despite a 5.5% drop in the Western Cape’s overall murder rate during the first quarter of this financial year, violent crime is still a major concern in several parts of the city.
Authorities are turning to smart technologies including drones and gunfire detection systems to aid in driving down crime in the metro.
