SABC crew living in fear after receiving death threats

Lesedi FM current affairs presenter and producer Dimakatso Motsoeneng is living in fear.

According to the SABC, the talented radio personality and two of her other colleagues have received threats of death, kidnapping and rape from anonymous men.

“Motsoeneng received a message telling her that she will be killed and that the children of two other colleagues will be kidnapped and raped. The anonymous sender blames presenters for how they handled interviews and debates on current affairs shows,” reads the statement by the SABC.

According to the public broadcaster, the anonymous sender who has been threatening the lives of the three newshounds, says they are to be blamed for the ANC’s poor performance in Maluti-A-Phofung and Metsimaholo municipalities during the November polls.

“The current affairs presenters are being accused of causing the ANC to lose control of the Metsimaholo and Maluti-A-Phofung municipalities in the Free State in last month’s elections,” reads the statement reads.

The SABC has further revealed that it has launched an investigation into the threats and will beef up security.

Dimakatso Motsoeneng explains, “It’s not nice because we are mothers, we have families, we have people that are looking after us. And if people come to you and make such statements, it simply means you don’t know where to go. I hope police will do whatever they can do to bring the perpetrators to book.”

Lesedi FM’s Current Affairs Executive Producer Naka Moloi says, “We are very concerned about the safety and security of our colleagues following the threats. But the fact of the matter is we as journalists. We were doing our job during the election coverage. We invited different political parties from different municipalities in the country. We did our homework, we did research. Our only sin was to probe issues and to ask tough questions.”
