Gauteng Premier David Makhura resigns

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, has resigned.

After 8 years in the top spot of South Africa’s economic hub, Makhura will step down on Thursday.

He’s also resigning as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

It is expected that the newly elected ANC Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, will assume the Premier position.

Following the party’s provincial conference in June, the party asked Makhura to vacate the office.

He had previously indicated that he would not be pursuing any further leadership positions in the province.

He’s also been embroiled in a corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital, but he’s dismissed the allegations relating to improper procurement as baseless.

Makhura was elected in 2014 after former premier Nomvula Mokonyane took up a ministerial post.
