David Makhura gets re-elected as Gauteng Premier

A close call at the polls gave the African National Congress (ANC) enough votes to re-establish control of South Africa’s most sought-after province. On Wednesday, David Makhura was re-elected as the Gauteng Premier.

Provincial legislatures, across the country, hosted the first sitting of the sixth legislature, where sworn members were allowed the opportunity to elect a Speaker and vote for a Premier.

The same procession took place in the national legislature, where Thando Modise was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the House.

In Gauteng, the ANC managed to boot the DA’s Solly Msimanga out of the position he occupied with a narrow 38 votes. During the secret ballot process, it was noted that two votes were spoilt and one other was deemed as invalid.

David Makhura, in reaction to his win, stated that he is committed to serving the needs of the people of Gauteng.
