The date for local government elections will remain 27 October up until a court rules otherwise. That’s according to Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who says the date will be officially gazetted as required by the Constitution. The IEC is approaching the courts to ask for a delay in the elections.
An inquiry led by former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke found that holding elections in October would not be free and fair.
Dlamini-Zuma said service delivery shouldn’t be affected if the local government elections don’t go ahead in October. She said current municipal councils will remain in place should there be a postponement.
