DA wins by-election for ward 17 in Mantsopa municipality

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has won the by-election in ward 17 of the Mantsopa municipality in the Free State. The party retained the seat it had won in the 2021 municipal elections.

The by-election was contested by four candidates from four political parties including the ANC, DA, EFF, and Truth and Solidarity Movement (TSM). The ward previously represented by the DA became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation.

Free State IEC spokesperson, Mmathabo Rasengane explains, “The new DA councillor is Leon Nicholas van Wyk in the Mantsopa municipality. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 local government elections with 58.72% of the total votes cast and compared to 62.65 during the 2021 municipal election. The voter turnout was 45.24%
