Culpable homicide case against Free State man after girlfriend mauled to death by pit bulls not enrolled in court

A case of culpable homicide against a Free State man arrested after his girlfriend was mauled to death by his pit bulls has not been enrolled in court.

The victim was attacked by the animals on Monday, and her boyfriend was handcuffed two days later in Mangaung.

The 42-year-old man was meant to appear in court on Thursday, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the matter was not enrolled.

Despite being arrested and charged with the gruesome death of his girlfriend in Namibia Square, near Bloemfontein, on Monday, the Free State man did not appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday, as the case was not enrolled.

This followed his 28-year-old girlfriend being mauled and killed by his three pit bulls at his home during a visit, shortly after 3 pm on Monday.

“The police rushed to the scene and found the 28-year-old victim lying on the ground, severely bitten by the dogs,” police spokesperson Thabo Covane said.

“The injuries were mostly on the lower parts of the body. Members at the scene had to put down three of the dogs, and the other was taken to safety with its puppies by the local SPCA [Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals].”

The man was initially charged with culpable homicide in respect of the Animal Matters Amendment Act of 1993.
