SADTU condemns racist conduct at Crowthorne Christian Academy

The South African Democratic Teachers Union is calling on the Department of Basic Education to rein in private schools.

This follows the expulsion of a 13-year-old pupil from the Crowthorne Christian Academy for allegedly refusing to cut her dreadlocks.

A dispute occurred during an argument between the parents, their daughter,

and two individuals from the school over her dreadlocks.

The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media.

One person has since been charged with assault and has been released on bail.

SADTU is condemning the incident, calling it racist.

The teacher union says it’s quite alarming that nearly 30 years into democracy,

some schools are still using hair policies to discriminate against African learners.

The union has also called on the department to conduct proper background checks on individuals before granting them school licences.
