Covid-19 vaccines available in SA should work on variants – expert

Vaccines available in South Africa should work for the variants discovered in India, according to Professor Anne von Gottberg from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

She says research still needs to be done, but mutations of the variant and information suggest our vaccines will be effective.

“If you look at the mutation and if you look at the details of those variants, at the moment, we are predicting that the vaccines should still work. That is one thing that will be investigated, and researched very carefully in the laboratories and then in the communities where vaccines have been given.”

Her comments follow the detection of two more COVID-19 variants in the country.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health reported 2,191 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

A total of 37 more deaths takes South Africa’s COVID-19 death toll to 54,724.

SA’s recovery rate remains stable at 95%.
