Nurses call for COVID-19 relief workers to be hired
The Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union is calling on the government to absorb the additional healthcare workers hired to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
This comes after the Gauteng health department announced over 800 nurses and doctors will be without jobs by the end of March due to budgetary constraints.
On Wednesday, the union resolved to embark on a march to the provincial health department’s office.
Lerato Mthunzi said, “the march is about protecting the jobs of all those people you called heroes during COVID-19. They all left their homes to protect South Africa. Today [the] government that sent them as heroes cannot hire them, they know our hospitals are barely surviving…..”
